RENAULT ALPINE GTA
STEREO WIRING
by Jonathan Carter
Hi,
Thanks for the
great site. I've found it very interesting and useful - particularly the
technical information, so I thought it only fair that I contribute something.
In my case details of the audio connectors in my GTA.
One thing I
haven't been able to find anywhere is any information about the audio
connector block. I don't know if my late GTA Turbo (1990) is different to
others in terms of the connections but certainly the original factory Philips
radio cassette player is different from most of those that I have seen in
earlier cars, so potentially the connectors are different too. The aftermarket
ISO-to-OEM adapters that are normally quoted for the GTA (e.g. Autoleads
FKS-421) never fit my car as the block in the car is female and so is the
block on the aftermarket connector kit. As they are both female, so they are
never going to plug together. The remote control adapter does work, however,
which is great!
I have to confess
that I have not tried the adapter that is available through Alpine Renault
Tuning, so maybe this has already been solved for most people but I had
already built my own ISO adapter a number of years ago. My adapter starts with
an aftermarket fitting kit (probably Autoleads) for a Jeep Cherokee. With a
little bit of careful modification, this will plug into the connector block
that is in the car. I then had to re-map all the wires in this kit as per the
attached diagram.
Two noteable
things about this solution are:
- There is no
earth connection in the main audio connector block. To get an earth, you have
to connect to the connector tab that is on the back of the audio display/clock
unit which is stacked on top of the main radio cassette and is separate. So,
I've kept this unit in as a clock (and an earth!)
- I've not been
able to easily identify + and - for the speakers. However, the attached
diagrams connect + to the larger of the 2 tabs on the speaker tab panel (which
I have assumed is +). The wires that arrive at the speakers are identically
coloured for each speaker. The connectors on each wire are different sizes so
they will only attach to the OEM Philips speakers one way. As long as + and -
are addressed consistently across all the speakers, I'm reliably informed that
it doesn't really matter which is actually which.
So, hopefully
these diagrams will save someone with a similar GTA a couple of hours of
fiddling around with a multimeter.
