Fuse box woes!

Postby LesC » Sun Nov 27, 2016 4:09 pm

Ok. This is an interesting photo! Thought I'd spend 1/2 hour figuring out why the heating doesn't work and this certainly doesn't help! As you all no doubt know this 25A fuse is for the heating and certainly doesn't work now. Although the fuse itself doesn't appear to have blown its welded to the holder. Fuse box probably now needs to be replaced and still not sure the heater works!
I'm naieve enough to think that surely the fuse should have blown if there was a fault LOL .
So any and all thoughts/ solution welcome :hang

Heating as in the blower not blowing or always cold?Had this very recently on a car although the fuse had blown. The blower unit was only working on two top speeds.Replaced resistor control with new and still same.Replaced with another complete secondhand blower unit and all good .Might be its pulling load on low speeds but not turning or the fuse was just in loose ?
I should have a few spare fuse holders. You can just replace that bank .

Hi Lee,
Blower doesn't work at all. Look closely at the fuse and thats exactly as I found it. The holder has melted and the fuse is stuck in the mess left! Heater wasn't working when I had the car so no idea how long its been like that!
Can you simply replace a section of a GTA fuse box? Looks like one unit to me, although to be fair after I found this issue I didnt look much further!
Appreciate yout help
Les

Put power direct to the fan to check its not seized/kaput .Don't worry about speeds for now, just see if it spins. You can swap out sections on the box.I'll see what I have.

Ok I'll try that. Won't be able to do it for a week or so though as I'm pretty much tied up. If I can change the offending section in the box though that would be a definite improvement! Thanks again.

This exact same thing has happened to me although the fan works, but intermittent on high speed. I thought I might be a poor connection at the fuse box causing sparking and heat.

Les

When I took a look at the same issue of the melting fuse holder, I found that the relay for the full power setting of the fan also had some melting, changed that and all seems fine.

Haven't had chance to explore further but thanks for pointing that out. How did you solve the molten holder problem? I'm thinking of buying a 25A block and running a separate feed to that if I can't get a block segment.
Anyone know if this fuse box/block is used in other Renaults? Find it hard to believe it wasn't considering the number of GTAs manufactured?

From memory, I think these fuse boards are made up of 4 x 6 way fuse boxes. If so, I wonder if this fuse box below (less lid and flanges) could be reworked to replace the 6 way block that is melting.

Something like that might work. Need to dismantle it to see what I have to work with and go from there. I'll post whatever my conclusion is!

Same happened with mine - melted fuse holder but fuse didn't blow.
I cut the wirs off the back and fitted a new fuse holder - still gets a little warm though - I'm guessing the fan is creating a bit of resistance in its old age... John C ??!
