RENAULT ALPINE GTA

Jacking

by Nic Lyons

You should be very careful where you place the jack under these cars. Because the floorpan is made from plastic it is easily damaged - not that you would normally place a jack directly under the floor, of course. My advice is to jack the car only at the proper jacking point using the supplied jack. If you want to use a trolley jack make sure that the rectangular metal plate behind the jacking point is in good condition and place a suitable piece of wood between the plate and the face of the jack. While working on the car I support the front and back on large blocks of wood - sections of railway sleeper or similar - with smaller pieces of wood placed directly under the intersection of a downward member of the subframe with a horizontal member. Needless to say, the car should be lowered very gently onto the blocks. I'm not sure whether this is an 'approved' method of supporting the car - but I've never encountered any problems. Once you've supported one side, go round to the other and do the same.
