GTA suspension - front drop links

Postby pgoldsmith » Thu Mar 08, 2018 8:20 pm

I think I'll need at least one if not two front suspension drop links.

Are these still available or do I need to throw myself at the mercy of Simon Autos ?

Simon autos...but beware, I started with the drop links, then it turned out the anti roll bar was corroded too (that needed replacing) and the front end fittings break and aren’t currently available either.
Simon autos keep promising the end retaining fittings “next month” as their supplier is having difficulty making them but that has been the situation for a year so far.
I’m pretty sure renault don’t have anything any more that is specifically alpine. Shared parts you might be lucky.

As Lee says the new droplink might not help. The droplinks movement/rust/years wears the bar away and so new ones are, if anything, a worse fit.
Its on the list of one things to do as I think Lee had the last new one from Dellboy ?

Oh !

So if these are needed to pass an MOT (which is my concern) then we are all a bit stuffed.

How are the drop links attached to the roll bar anyway? I can see some sort of raise metal but nothing that looks like it unscrews or detaches.

There is a split ring and a cap assembly but not available.... I shall have to work something out to replace the whole unit but I'm thinking hole in bar, washer and split pin type shizzle to replace the OE method.Pointless if the bar is worn away as most will be.......

Anyone want to stump up/commit to a run of bars ?
Bums on seats please as I'm not going to do it as a one off exercise....I do live very close to Sheffield but the streets ain't paved with stainless anymore ...

Before anyone asks, no idea on price. If you need one then you need one or you can't drive your car ;-)
I will do all the running around to sort it and would think initial run would need to be 10. Those that stump up and commit get them at cost, those that come later pay some RAT TAX ..Simples ....

I don’t need a bar, but I still have to work out what to do at the ends....if you do end fittings that fits OE, I’m in.
I’d expect lots of cars will need this...
Alternatively I was also wondering if a sleeve inside, or new bushes with undersized holes might work as be an alternative to get rid of the play?
Definitely a bodge...but....

Lee C,

Thanks. If mine doesnt fail (rubber bush has some cracking) then it will only be a matter of time. No idea if my bar is worn or not, I guess you cant tell until the drop link is temoved.
Please count me in and let us know how much to 'stump' up.
I'm sure there must be others out there with similar issues on these cars which are now min of 27 yrs old.

Would be interesting to see if a new bar on old links tightened everying up, that might be a good solution...or new bushes in old links with new bar.
At that price it seems a bargain....
I still need end fittings... :wtf

No .You will need to put new droplinks on as well. The rubber goes brittle and is full of rust from the old bar. New bars will probably come with a hole in the ends for splitpins. Stamping as per OE is not possible/cost effective

So this for the bar, are the drop links and rubber bush mounts available only through Simon Autos?

Update on this is I have a source for OE rollbars, limited to 7 pairs, front and rear
I won't do just the fronts as it's a job lot.
Price is £375 a set incl delivery.
I can't afford to sit on these so won't be putting them on the shelves. If I get enough interest I'll buy them, if not ...not .
