Smoking turbo

It seems the turbo on my GTA may be picking up some bad habits.

I notice some smoke while driving but not at idle so I checked the air pipes from the turbo to the engine and sure enough there was a little misplaced oil in there. The cars still drives well, better than ever in fact but I guess it's turbo refurbishment time, I could be wrong.
If I am to refurbish the turbo can anyone tell me if I can simply exchange it for a bigger one e.g. a T3? And if I do what other things do I need to worry about like the waste gate maybe and importantly will it still be reliable?

Would it even make much of a difference????

You probably wouldn't notice that much difference without upping the boost and fuel to suit but if having it rebuilt etc then worth looking at an upgrade for future.You don't want to go too big/laggy as on it's own it will make it feel worse without the other mods .....Larger exhaust housing 0.48 and a 60 trim inducer or something along those lines .
T3 std old skool Cossie spec ..

Try Midland Turbo.Just the other side of the M1 from me .They are Ex Garrett guys and do a lot of 80's stuff so will know what you need .
I have a std original Garrett wastegate new .Bought it for a car and never used as eventually we tuned for much more boost .

Tom,
Take the air intake pipe of, then hold on to the end of the compressor nut and give it a wiggle.
if its excessive then yes probably the turbo.
if its slight then maybe not.

I have a brand new T3 if your interested though.
make me an offer.

Tom,

Good points raised by both, note that if you do go to a .48 turbine housing from a.36, you will lean out the engine, and need to correct the fuelling. Ask if unsure.
