Postby mogster242 » Thu Dec 17, 2015 12:55 am

I have heard that hans devices will be required for hillclimb in 2016...
Can anyone advise on whether or not this is true please?
Thanks

Very much true if you are in anything except standard road going with a 3 point belt.
The 2016 Bluebook & the MSA news letters explain it better than I could, also there is a long topic on uphill racers.

I don't read it that way. We run modified production, which is road going and the regs clearly stat road going is exempt Richard, see below;

Mandatory use of FHR
With effect from 1 January 2016 the use of FHRs becomes mandatory in Racing, Sprints, Hillclimbs and Stage Rallies – but there are exceptions. In Stage Rallying, Historic Category 1 cars (pre-1968) are exempt. In Sprints and Hillclimbs ‘Roadgoing’ category vehicles are exempt.
Additionally in Sprints and Hillclimbs, as well as in Racing ‘Period defined’ vehicles are exempt, this is cars of Periods A –H, i.e. those constructed prior to 1st January 1977.

I see this applying to Completion cars only e.g. stripped caged and running slicks.

Please clarify?

Re: Hans device (FHR)

My understanding is:
Road going production cars - recommended (just like cages)
Modified Cars upwards - FHR required, as are cages.

HANS is a brand name, FHR Frontal Head Restraint is the device name. and Simpson do a good Hybrid device.

2016 Blue Book has been on line for a while.
https://www.msauk.org/assets/2016bbcomp ... -res-1.pdf

See section S 9.2.1 and here is an extract.
An FIA approved FHR device, fitted in accordance with
FIA regulations is mandatory for all drivers with the
exception of Period Defined Vehicles, Road-going
Series Production Cars and Road-going Specialist
Production Cars.

being in red, means it is a new update this year.

FYI, all rally car drivers, and co-drivers/navigators, need FHR device too from 2016.

And then there is helmets.......

I have heard from V2Sports, that they are no longer importing open face helmets, because they are not selling well. It is suspected that in the future open face helmets "may" only applicable to historic racing.

My advise wold be to future proof yourself. If buying a helmet, get full face and get one with FHR (Frontal Head Restraint) posts. Then if you do any rallying, even as a co-driver, you can easily add/borrow an FHR. Costs a little more, should pay off in the long run, and "if" you did loan it or sell it, then it would be easier to do so.

Also, Get one that is SA2015, rather than SA2010 or SA2005, because SA2015 will meet regulations for a longer length of time.

Here is an extract from the current Regulations:

Section K 10.3.1. Standards. Helmets bearing one of the under
mentioned ‘standards’ may be approved by the MSA
subject to other criteria being met. See also
drawing 10.3.1.
