Gutter Madness

Postby Dave Williams » Sun Apr 22, 2018 6:57 pm

Tried to fit replacement "gutters" or the trim (GTA)
Any suggestions ?? I failed.
Push fit or slide from one end ?
Do you need to pre squash the springy bit that goes into the channel ?
Heat gun to soften ?
I had a go - used some silicon spray..seemed to help..could get part of it in..
Faffed around for quite some time...gave up.

Any advice please rom anyone who has replaced these ?
Thanks !

Assuming Simon Auto plastic replacements?
Yes you have to squash the moulding, get a pair of pliers and work your way along. Lube and slide into the window rubber first, careful not to bend as the plastic will whiten if bent. Then press the rest in.

Thanks Lee... these were the end of the line Dieppe parts. Not sure if that makes it easier or harder.

I did slide in the gutter above the window seal...
Thought a warm day would have made it easier. Silicone spray really helped.
Pushing the rest in tried my patience

I was in 2 minds whether to crimp the springy section a bit (without roughening the surface) .so thanks...will give it a go..based on your kind advice.

Worst case I will have to crimp more aggressively and use some spots of adhesive if it is not held firm.

Hi Guys
Are you talking about the black plastic trim that runs along where a gutter would normally be, above the door from the pillar just below the guard to the vent at the rear?
I have none on my blue 90 GTA - they were apparently removed and broken as part of the horrible respray by the previous owner.
The paint is mint now!
I tried to order of Andreas at Simon, but he said they were no longer available, and described it as a "right angled rubber piece" which doesn't sound right. On my black car they are plastic.
My panel & paint guy, who used to work on Alpine GTAs in Ireland and Europe, told me they should be plastic and slide in.
Does anybody know if anybody has these available?
That is the only part I need no to finish the job.
Cheers
Graeme

Re my right hand door check strap, which I posted about recently, I have managed to sort that.
Apparently the mechanism was a Fiat part, rather than shared with a Renault as you would expect.
We were not able to get one, but an engineering firm has laser cut a new part here (NZ$60 about $120 UKp)

Yeah. The ~6ft plastic trim that goes from the A pillar along the roof line on each side. (It's a plastic trim rather than rubber)

The technique was to pre squeeze the trim with mole grips... slide it into the channel above the rubber seal/ rear side glass. Then push fit it into the channel. (Using silicone spray to help)

Maybe check again with Simon..(Mr Dell might have some)..can imagine shipping down under might be costly.

Yep - shipping in a nightmare, and then tax on the shipping!

I have a few sets of OEM left with the metal foil layer in the plastic sandwich. Might be over length for shipping. Will need to check if they are under 1.5m as they don't fold well ;-)

They have made it more complicated now:

UK Tube = Length of the item plus twice the diameter must be less than 104cm, with the greatest dimension less than 90cm

UK Large parcel = Max length 1.5m or 3m length and depth combined

Looks like Parcelforce worldwide has much more flexible limits though with up to 5m combined.

Get a quote from www.interparcel.com

they use multiple couriers and have a selection of services.
Their "own brand" service is delivered by UPS, never had a problem and they do worldwide.
And they will collect from you, their drop off shops or take to Depot.

I have just put a set in supplyed by Steven, silicone spray and washing up liquid no good the best way I found was grease coat the channel in the car and sections of the gutter as up push it in. there is no need to squeeze the rear section to fit it but you have to on the front.
You must do this before starting to fit the gutter, copy how it was done on the old section you will see it is slightly bent over to one side, plus run a small screw driver up the front pillar and at the top the recessed section ends mark where this is because if you slide the back in to far the front won’t fit and to try and pull it out again a small amount is hard.
Once installed get some de grease and clean up the gutter and paint it is still hard tack your time. :up
