T34 Turbo on A610?

Postby r5gordini » Mon Mar 26, 2018 12:00 pm

Hi All,

Just playing with thoughts... As you know I have been doing the Megasquirt conversion on my A610. I remembered I bought a T34 from a guy on the Turborenault forum a few years ago. It was intended for my 21 but I'm not doing any more work on that.

Does anyone have any thoughts as to whether it would be a good match for my A610? I am a novice at matching turbos to engines.

https://turborenault.co.uk/threads/t34- ... ost-365979

It's a T34 with 360 degrees Turbine housing is a 0.48

Is the flange compatible?

Any thoughts on whether it would be a good idea to explore further? Just don't know. Don't know how much power it would support?

Thanks,

Andrew

p.s. I am a little embarrassed to be asking such a vague question - I'm not even sure what specifics I should be considering?

Ideally I'd like a bit more "puff". I'm not too worried about a little more lag than standard.

In standard spec you can get 300lb/ft of torque by dialling up the boost to a Bar. I don't think you'll get a lot more than that without some serious work.

you have a high spec ECU, now you are putting an old school turbo on.
Get a Borg Warner. EFR 6258

I can get you a discount from those guys too. 5% ish but they are the cheapest to start with..

Thanks Simon! Hedley,

Wow - that looks very nice. But expensive - I'll need to save the pennies before I splash out. May not be worthwhile thinking about the T34 for now. I just thought about it because I had it hanging around.

Turbo on an A610 isn't a bad match for the 3.0 to be honest, you wouldn't see much difference with the T34 as the spec is pretty similar. Simon is right you should look at a modern turbo when you change it, response is much better more than anything else. But the standard turbo won't hold you back too much until you get past 300-310 bhp. I think you would need to run 1.2-1.3 bar on the standard turbo to make 300bhp if everything else is as it should be.

Hi Andrew,

The T34 depending on spec is a very capable performer, issue is many people / suppliers have different versions if it is not a genuine Garrett. However, as you have it, and up for an experiment, I would drop the .48 A/R turbine housing fitted, and use the 0.63 A/R you already have on your A610 ie swap the core and compressor assembly over into the A610 turbine housing. If it has a stage I T3 turbine, which it should, but may not, it won't go in at the turbine inducer diameter. But that is a simple case of boring the housing, pretty common stuff, I do it, and all the turbo upgrade suppliers are doing it all the time... and off you go... it will spool more aggressively than the OE A610 turbo setup, potentially make a bit more HP, but will be more punchy... and you've already got it, so why not... :O)

Cheers,
Martin

Thanks all for your varied responses. I simply can't afford the modern turbo at the moment. I'll see how it goes and consider doing what Martin says.

First things first - fix the fuel starvation issue. New FPR fitted. Now needs a higher flow fuel pump. It's arrived but I haven't been able to fit it yet.
