Further A610 tuning questions

Postby r5gordini » Thu Feb 08, 2018 1:35 pm

Hi All,

I have a few last-minute questions regarding tuning my A610.

What's the maximum recommended rev limit?

What's the maximum recommended power level? Is there any problem with aiming over 300 bhp on standard internals?

What's the maximum recommended boost level?

Can the engine take high boost at low RPM? e.g. 1.5 bar at 3000 rpm?

Thanks again! Can't wait until the rolling-road session ;-)

Whoever is doing the tuning should know or they shouldn't be doing the tuning :MoreSarc

No where near enough information to give any answers......

Internals will be fine

Thanks!

It's my paranoia that I'm asking! I haven't been asked these things by the tuner.

I don't know what others have done, so looking for prior experience. I'm not sure what other info I need...

MegaSquirt ECU. Wasted spark, LS1 coils. Batch-fire injection. Stock internals. Upgraded injectors, 630cc, OE fuel regulator and fuel pump, OE boost solenoid under MegaSquirt control. Standard T3 turbo.

Standard clutch and gearbox. Not sure how much torque the gearbox can safely take?

I've heard 7300 rpm mentioned before as a sensible rev limit, but I suspect we will just look at where the power tails off.

And for boost, again I think we will look at where the power tails off.

Box will be fine and the std clutch will give way long before it sees any danger.

Revs for the sake of it? No point as the turbo will just stop making power at some point well below 6k I would expect.
All down to how good your tuner is ...engines is engines innit

I predict ....270bhp and 320lbs 16psi ...heat stops play

Anyone else? Are we running a book? £35k 610 to the closest within 10% ? ;)

I’m not betting against you, the cars that make more than that don’t have stock induction and turbos.
Think a lot more needs to be spent to get to 300hp, I seem to remember pages of threads about this on the old forum. I think I might have been coming here too long.
Mind you a confirmed 35k 610 would be a great thing to see....

Injectors a bit big ?
Not sure how low a duty they can run? I'd have thought 450cc more than enough with pressure reg.Still ...only one way to find out.

I've got a A610 special build to get up and running this year...only been 4 years in the making .....on/off for various reason but this year it's got to give up it's plot in the RATNEST.....
It's running heavily modded heads,Cams,Custom T3,modded inlet +++ lots of little tweaks to spark etc... I forget.....Emerald ECU,MellowYellow decat and exhaust ... We are expecting 350/70

My standard GTA engine has seen 303bhp at 1.25 bar, but chose to wind it back to 280 ish just to be safe.
Thats 40% over standard, so a 610 should be well good for 300-350 bhp with out a doubt.

Above 300 ...its like the sound barrier:-)
On a std 610 T3 I can't see it getting near.No such thing as a free lunch.

I think it’s a bit more complicated than that, 610 has different heads and stroke etc, plus heat must become a big issue all this is waiting for me with my 3lt build.

Interesting discussion. Thanks for the hints, tips, etc.

The injectors are a bit big, granted, but I have been able to tune them very nicely. The Dekas are supposed to be super controllable at even small pulse widths. Idle is far better than it ever was with the standard ECU. And transient throttle response is brilliant - there was a lot of snatchiness with the old ECU and injectors with on/off throttle transitions. I have tuned acceleration enrichment quite nicely - it's still a little rich on the tip in, but the transition from off to on throttle is really nice. Even with overrun fuel cut too!

Also thanks for the reassurance on the power that the clutch and box can handle.

I'll be going to the tuner next Friday for an initial visit so that we can check things out before the dyno runs. No point in booking a dyno only to find some issue that stops work. I found somewhere (by recommendation) really close to home so it's very convenient for me. Initial communications are very positive. They deal a lot with Supras and the like. Not that that's a good thing, but there you go!

Watch this space. Exciting times. I'm hoping for 300bhp - car already has had a decat, so that helps. I think Lee is right that the turbo will run out of puff at higher revs. If things look good and the turbo is the limiting factor, I will consider an upgrade in the future. The dyno readout I have from when Phildini had the car shows max 237 bhp at 5250 rpm. Boost was a bit low then at 0.65 bar.

300hp..you should all aim higher.

Here's an inspirational picture.... same engine.. with some 'minor' tweaks

Isn't the A610 engine used by Venturi in the 300 and 400? If so they got a reliable 408bhp for the 400 GT admittedly using 2 turbos and some 600 bhp for Le Mans racers not so reliable! Just saying for perspective.......

Yes ...but I doubt they just bolted bits on ;-).
John lane in the states is up near 500bhp I think but it takes massive amounts of work to the internals, heads, manifolds etc so years of development and loads of ££££

I think the mods on this one will make it better and a better delivery/drive but essentially without a turbo upgrade I can't see it getting to 300.
