BIG Engine

Postby Alpineandy » Thu Jul 07, 2005 1:50 pm

What's the biggest capacity for an atmo car?
Bearing in mind it would be for a GTA or an A310, what bits would/could be used from pugs, volvos and renaults etc.
I think volvo did a 3 litre PRV but don't know if it was bore or stroke or both.
If it was stroke would the crank be a straight swap etc etc etc

... straight swap...
In principle yes, but we are having all kinds of problems getting the citroen 24v to fit in ... the bellhousing has had to be cut, rewelded and re drilled, only two holes matched up, the clutch spigot is completely different, Engine mounts, alternator position... it goes on and on.
BUT we are getting there, almost ready to go into the car. :)

If you use the Z7X pistons/liners (crank is the same as GTA atmo in stroke - but even fire) then you will have 2975cc. I do a Ferry forged crank which brings it up to 3.2L, and also some forged liners with bigger pistons to a maximum of 3.4L. This has been used in a Twingo grass track car.

No, I mean that 'If you have to totally rebuild the original engine, Would a Pug Crank and Volvo Piston/liners (or whatever) be a straight replacement and give a 5.7 litre (or whatever...) motor'.

Maximum capacity with standard parts is 2975cc, but if you fitted 93mm liners/pistons you would also need new headgaskets, heads machining.

Simpler to do a whole engine swap. :D

Hi DG, I was replying to rupert but you got in between...

So GTA pistons and Liners are the biggest standard option.

Are all the cranks the same thro then?

Not quite. GTA is 91mm bore x 73mm stroke (2849cc). The longest throw original cranks are all 73mm but you can use Z7X pistons/liners which are 93mm bore, thus making the 2975 cc, against the GTA 2849cc.

Only difference between cranks is the odd fire and even fire combination.

Lot of work for not much gain in capacity.

Yes.

I guess the long throw crank you've got is v v expensive.
