a610 gearbox oil

Postby jagcat12 » Wed Apr 27, 2016 2:31 pm

Can anyone suggest an alternative to tranself TRX 80 W oil and where to get it .Have checked with several oil suppliers and all suggest that 75/80 would be OK but want to make sure.

thanks Dave g

Interesting

I want to change the gearbox oil on my GTA & like the A610, the handbook lists TRX 80W - API GL5 as the recommended lube. I asked for some in my local motor factors in Newark & the guy looked at me as if I was mad. He spent 5 minutes trying to find a modern equivalent but couldn't.

TRX is obsolete

I would recommend 75W/90 fully synthetic only. GL5

From experience I think the shift quality goes bad on 75W/90...
I'm putting back straight 80W. Can report the difference this weekend.

Thought is that the boxes are 20-30 years old and many not had oil changes at the specified intervals if at all in recent times so ya pays ya money takes ya pick .I've been told by a few ex/current Renault techs to stick with the 80w so that's what I do .

Yep I'm sure the motor factors cross reference last time was around the 'Hypoid' oil part e.g. for transaxle.
I'm just here for the gasoline.

I have been using Redline Lightweight Shockproof oil in various transaxles, gearboxes and diffs for about 10 years. I have seen temp drops of 25 degrees C in my BMW 2002 race car gearbox and diff, and a mechanic friend has had the synchros of his GTA Turbo improve to such an extent, he didn't bother repairing the gearbox after using this oil. It is expensive, but then how often do you change it?

As has been mentioned, I have seen the resultant synchro problems with using an 80/90 oil in many Renault Transaxles. This has been a problem since the R8 through to the Fuego and beyond.

When I rebuilt my car, I refilled with a semi sync 75/90 API GL4/5 according to the can and now when the car is very cold ( winter ) it baulks into third for a few miles until it's warmed up, doesn't matter how slow and careful you are with the gear change or how precise you are with the clutch.
It never ever did this before the rebuild despite the gear linkage bushes and balls being so bad I had to put it into first and use two hands to then get reverse, on Clees advice it will be getting straight 80 ASAP......
