Brake Master Cylinder.

Just a received a call from the garage fitting a new front brake hose to my Atmo. The metal brake pipe was seized, and snapped, so they were going to replace that too. No real drama, as I suspected it might - hence not doing it myself. However, in the course of replacing the latter, they have broken some white plastic connector which is attached to the top of the master cylinder. They advise that Renault are having to place on back order so the usual story of 10 days plus. Are any of you familiar with what this part is, and if so, is it common to other vehicles so that I may obtain one quicker?

Having now had a look at the diagram, the part which has been broken is the dog-leg plastic connector used to connect the hose from the the master cylinder to the fluid reservoir. I would imagine that there are other cars around with a reservoir remote from the master cylinder, which use the same part.

It has an 60 'Alpine' part number so probably won't be common to anything else. The rubber bung has a 77 'Renault' part number so must be used elsewhere.

Thanks for the quick response, Steven. Yes, it's the the part with the 600 part No. so maybe I'll have to resign myself to the mercy of the Renault Parts supply chain. :( . The explanation given by the garage is that it was brittle and broke. I can understand it being brittle, but I'm not sure whether it getting broken was likely or just carelesness - all they were supposed to do was to replace the adjacent metal brake pipe.

Stephen,
I just had another look on the PR1132 'fiche'. I agree that the part I'm talking about is listed as 60 01 007 242 (#6) on Page 37.401. However, I see that on Page 37.201 (and 37.211) the same part (#2) is shown in a dashed box (along with two rubber seals) as 77 01 202 161. Do you reckon it would be better to pusue the latter (i.e the 77 No) through Renault?

Probably, certainly more economical but still 'check lead time' so likely to be back order. From Renault rather than Alpine though so could be quicker. Get your dealer to check.

At least you get all the new seals/washers for 20p and you may need them. You don't want to wait another 10 days if you find out you do!

The steel pipes to the Master Cylinder are quite hard to get to, and the possibility of pushing against the plastic fluid connections would be quite high. I took my fuel tank out when I rebuilt my master cylinder as I could not get the steel pipes undone for lack of space.

Taking the tank out was not that big of a job except that it was full, and so had to drain 16 Gal into drums.
