How much should I pay for a new clutch. Fitted as well.

Also, how much should I be looking at for both headgaskets being replaced.

And last but not least, how much does anyone reckon for a gearbox rebuild ???

Maybe we can all club together and divise a " round about " price list. So we dont get ripped off ???

I had a new clutch fitted 12 months ago by a sports car specialist garage (mainly deal in Porche) for the sum of £375 including clutch and fitting. I think from memeory, Renault dealers quote something silly like 25 hours labour. This guy did it in a day.

Thats not bad, just wondering if it would be cheaper to do everything at once, then theres no messing about as the engine and box will be out of the car.

A lot cheaper! If the engine/gearbox/subframes down then doing the clutch is about a 20 minute job!

Headgaskets are normally quoted at 20 odd hours, but that plus parts, testing etc....

I had a new clutch fitted a couple of years ago by Roadspeed in Stroud. Cost around £800. It did include a new clutch fork and, I think, slave cyclinder. £375 is very cheap!

I'm having the head gaskets done on my car now. I'll let you know how much when I get the bill!

Had my head gaskets done with engine in situ.

I had my clutch done about 2 years ago. I used a local guy who specialises in Alfa's & various race machinery. All in cost was about £600.00 + VAT and that included stripping the gearbox and replacing a pin on the 2nd gear shaft. Also, changed the slave cylinder & fork at the same time (although I had only replaced the cylinder about a year before-hand - that's a fun job with the engine in situ by the way!).

While trying to find someone to do the work, I called a local Renault dealer who said that the starting price would be approx. £2500.00, but would not even promise that would be the "end" price. Their excuse was that the last one they did took about two weeks. My view is - "it's only a car" and a decent mechanic ought to be able to pull it apart in fairly short order.

The problem with Renault dealers is, even though they created the car, most the engineers at the dealerships have never worked on one so have as much of a clue as any garage.

It is always far quicker to drop the engine/subframe down than do the head gaskets with the engine in situ, problem is it renders the vehicle unmovable in the workshop due to there being no rear wheels for the car to sit on, so some garages go against this.

Considering a decent clutch for a GTA is about £180 (use patent parts at your peril!) and that the engine has to come out to do the clutch properly thats very cheap - too cheap? Beware I've seen a couple of GTA's where they have cut the subframe to do the clutch in situ and then welded it back up afterwards! Make sure you use genuine Renault head gaskets too - some patent gaskets are known to cause problems. I reckon its about a good days work for someone who really knows what their doing and with some help on hand to do it properly.

Just got my bill for having the head gaskets done: £1235.04 in total.

This includes:

head repair, £180

coolant conditioner(don't know what this is!), £7.80

I sourced the head gasket set and head bolts myself from a motor factors, cost: £139.70

I bought a water pump last year, from a motor factors: £58.16

I had my clutch done in 2003, costs:

clutch release fork, £51
slave cylinder, £88
clutch kit, £220
belt, £12.50
coolant, £5
remove engine and fit parts, £350

total including VAT, £853.64

I could write a list as long as you like of Renault parts I've bought over the last couple of years! But as these prices seem to fluctuate alot I don't think it's worth it.

Is it conceivable to carry out replacing a clutch as a diy job, or do you need access to a 4 post lift?

I think any job is conceivable as a DIY job, with the right tools and facilities. But in the case of a clutch change, I think a 4 post lift would be needed.

I've seen a couple of japanese web sites, where the owners of GTAs have removed their engines to change clutches etc. The engines are sat on palletts and trolley jacks. But it looks like they've still needed a 4 post lift to lift the car clear of the engine.

Yes! They decided to pass the exhaust, as long as I said I fitted it myself afterwards, if I am stopped!

It wasn't just the noise level, they were adamant that an exhaust should have a silencer by law.
