nightmare

Postby ALPINEROB » Sat Oct 01, 2005 10:20 pm

hi all

i had a big scare yesterday after looking at my carbs i noticed 2 of the 6 jets were blocked so i decided to take the webers apart
stripped the first 1 down replaced 1 jet put it back together :D
started on the 2nd undone al the retaining screws and while lifting the top off with the floats i heard two things drop out
1 fell in the carb and rested on the butterfly no problem easily retrieved
the 2nd could not be found i tried with a magnet but not much luck as the main part was brass and only the ball bearing was steel
could not find it i then had to remove the carbs and manifolds still no sign i pushed the car forward thinking it might be on the floor nothing after 2 hours pulling my hair out and coming to terms with the thought of trying to purchase more carbs as the rebuild kits are impossible to find my carbs are from the talbot tagora and are 40 it i cant even find anything in any search engines about them
i decided to clean out the v of the engine while it was exposed it had a oil water mix in some of the cavities
while cleaning on the right hand bank i think {pots 4,5,&6} near where the funny y shaped metal thingy is, there is a small hole that had a small amount of oil in and while poking around it something dug into my finger
upon further inspection i realised it was the bit i had spent 3 hours looking for
what a relief spent another hour and a half putting it all back together
went for a quick test drive no brakes then remembered the vacumn pipe was disconnected after reconnecting it proceeded driving all was well
it was like being on a rollercoaster i was up i was down i felt sick but what a rush when it was fixed again

You may find that the parts you require are in most 40 IDA rebuild kits even though they are a different part number. If one part on the Tagora kits was different, then it would be a different part number for the whole kit, but the parts you need may be the same across the board.

There are quita a few places in the States that do rebuild kits, if you do a search for 40 IDA for instance. Drop them an email and ask, as they will know if the same parts are used on all of the ranges.

hi david
i purchased 2 kits for the 40 ida but the main gasket was different
the only useable parts were the accelerator pump diaphram and manifold gaskets

This doesnt make sense. If your carbs are 40IDA's and you order an IDA rebuild kit then all the jets, gaskets, tubes should fit, no matter what car they came off..

Not being funny, but these definately are Webers?

The Zenith triple downdraught carbs that came on the Porsche 914's look identical and had the same manifold fitment as the webers which would explain how those gaskets fit but nothing else does, and the acc pump is just a diaphragm.

Other than that I haven't a clue. :?

Hmm, some confusion then....The Tagora triples are definately 40 IDA's.

I'll investigate further... :?

Ive found this, which a listing of all Webers, but nothing like 40 IT

http://www.piercemanifolds.com/Repairkits.htm

Worryingly, the only thing ive found close is the Zenith triple downdraught I mentioned above which by coincidence is called a 40 TI :?
